Rebecca Sarah Rudolph - Born 29 Apr 1997
Becky gave us a rather exciting time being born!

Bobby had taken his time being born. We knew Becky would be a lot faster, but we were in no hurry to leave for the hospital. Mom was rocking at home on the birthing ball in the kitchen. Jer and I were at the dining room table eating lunch. Mom asked when we could leave and I showed her my unfinished Ben and Jerry's ice cream container - nice!

So shortly later Mom, Becky and I got in the blue Chevy van and headed to Manchester Hospital. Mom was having stronger contractions and working the Lamaze breathing. As we got to Main Street in Manchester, mom was up in the passenger seat on her knees facing the back of the van, leaning over the back of the seat and breathing quickly. Several red lights slowed us. I was really tempted to gun it and run the lights, but mom was kneeling in the seat backwards, forget about wearing a seatbelt! I thought Becky was coming out right there on the side of Main Street in Manchester. But the contraction eased and we continued on.

We got to Manchester Hospital in a hurry, another contraction going as we pulled up to the Emergency Room. I threw the keys to the security guard and said 'Do what you want with it.' He was rather surprised and started to ask questions, but immediately changed his mind when he saw someone helping Mom out of the van and into a wheel chair in a real big hurry. "Good Luck!" we heard from him as we rapidly wheeled in through the emergency entrance and down the hallway double timing it, knowing the way to Maternity from last time. No time for any of that silly check-in stuff. Just Mom and Dad and Becky, moving fast.

We get to the elevator and pressed the up button; we were the only ones there waiting. Another very strong contraction, the transition type, began. Still no elevator. People were beginning to walk up behind us, also waiting for the elevator. Mom was breathing strong, hitting all of the Hee and Who notes real hard.

The elevator finally arrived and opened, we turned around, quickly wheeled in backwards and stopped. It seemed that Becky was coming out any second. Mom was still breathing hard. Everyone else who had been waiting with us for the elevator, was peering in around the sides of the elevator doors, mouth's hanging open, just gaping. We were waiting for them to get in, but no one made a move to enter the elevator. I said with a smile "We'll just take this one." Ding, the door closed, just the three of us again. The contraction eased a little.

We made it to Maternity briskly and the nurses took over with calm professionalism, getting Mom situated quickly. Mom asked for something for the pain and the nurses responded "There's no time for that honey, this baby's about to be born!" Our obstetrician was not to be found. The nurses were encouraging Mom to hold back and not push; there was no doctor present yet.

Finally the obstetrician arrived. Street clothes of course. He managed to get one arm into his white hospital coat before Becky decided she'd had enough of this waiting. Mom gave two strong pushes and out popped Becky just like a watermelon seed. The doctor got into position just in time to catch her, still only one arm in his hospital coat. Becky was cool, calm and collected and started breathing on her own right away. Becky was happy, and so were we, having been at Maternity for all of five minutes. Don't wait too long at home!

Robert Charles Rudolph - At the Tiller Sailing on Fishers Island Sound - 14 Sep 2013
A beautiful day of sailing with Laura Lisa in our Capri 14 footer - We put in at Barn Island Wildlife Management Area, sailed south across Little Narragansett Bay and sailed right up onto the beach at Napatree Point for lunch. We then tacked straight upwind all afternoon due West into Fisher's Island Sound. We then circumnavigated the Sandy Point sand bar, passing Stonington Point and running quickly through and down the ship channel as other much larger boats were ahead and astern of us. We followed the channel for a while and then turned back into Little Narragansett Bay and headed for home.
